More and more people move into cities. In 1950 only 17% of the world population lived in cities, in the year 2007 the level exceeded the 50% mark for the first time and until 2050 the UN expect an increase up to 75%.Whereas mainly the metropolitan areas and mega-cities in Asia, Africa and Latin- America are concerned, also in Europe and North America the population pressure on cities increases. 

At the same time it is obvious that in view of climate change and limited resources this cannot continue as before, because the new human habitat consumes too much energy, has an enormous hunger and thirst and produces an enormous amount of waste. Within metropolitan areas the world’s battle for sustainability will be won or lost.
