Angst is a protective mechanism that warns animals and humans of danger and threats. This instinctive reaction can turn into a torturing neurosis, though, and is then called a phobia. People suffering from phobia are afraid of seemingly harmless situations or objects. Sometimes people have panic attacks just by looking into a mirror or because they have to make a banal decision. Once you have started to explore the issue, you will learn that there is almost nothing too small or too insignificant to scare people. It may even happen that people live in panicked fear of being afraid. That is called "Photophobia". With ironic distance I show exaggerated characters who suffer from those bizarre conditions. The identities shown are like cartoons or figures in a play. The »horrifying« situations are shown like stage design. The crooked perception of reality is recreated by photographically created illusions. To achieve that, photos are digitally remastered to create a surreal, obviously artificial image.
